Chapter 16

Bold Steps

“Is there anything you want to do tonight, darling?” Gabriel asked as Taylor slurped up some soup.

Rather than order out yet again, Taylor insisted on making his own dinner despite his limited cooking skills. While Gabriel seemed shocked that Taylor would even consider heating up some ramen and calling it a meal, he hadn’t stopped him. He did read the ingredients and look vaguely appalled. Gabriel frequently took advantage of the labeling on food to see what exactly Taylor ate. He explained that he used to watch his humans cook, so he knew a lot of recipes, and it was strange seeing everything premade. He hadn’t ever seen something like instant soup, though, and clearly didn’t entirely approve. But Taylor loved the salty broth and tangled ramen noodles.

“Um, maybe we could watch something,” Taylor said shyly. This was their first relaxing night together and he probably should have planned a fancy meal and event, something more like a real date, but he was so exhausted he hadn’t bothered. Gabriel probably would have no problems planning something like that but since Taylor didn’t really want to go out, he hadn’t asked.

“A movie?” Gabriel asked with keen interest, and Taylor grinned. Gabriel knew all about the modern world now, but he hadn’t experienced it for himself. They occasionally had the tv on while Taylor did homework but he didn’t want to get too distracted catching up in his classes, so it was limited even though Gabriel was curious.

“Yeah,” Taylor said. “Why don’t you pick one out? I like everything.”

“You don’t want anything in particular?”

“I want something you pick,” Taylor said, and Gabriel reached out to take his hand and squeeze it.

“I’ll pick something you enjoy,” Gabriel promised.

As they snuggled together on the large sectional, Taylor had to admit that Gabriel had chosen well. It was a romantic comedy he hadn’t seen before but had gotten good reviews. Romantic comedies were his hidden pleasure, since as a guy he wasn’t supposed to like movies like this. But he did, just as he liked reading romance novels when no one would notice. He loved romance of all sorts. Maybe that was why Gabriel bonded with him. He had so many problems with sex, but he desperately wanted romance. Maybe that was the sort of pleasure Gabriel fed on. He leaned against his demon and glanced up at him. Gabriel was staring at the screen with rapt attention but the instant Taylor gazed at him, he turned and smiled.

“Do you need anything?” Gabriel asked, and Taylor shook his head and nestled against him.

Gabriel’s arm slung around him as he curled up and leaned against his strong demon, enjoying the feel of his body as the characters broke into a passionate argument, pledging to hate each other forever even as they cast desperately desirous looks at each other.

Everything was so dramatic and as the plot unfolded and it grew more and more ridiculous and the humor shone through clearly, Taylor found himself giggling with
